Earthquake Magnitudes

Last week, while looking at the 1964 Great Alaska quake, we learned about earthquake magnitudes in terms of noodles.

Let’s take another look, this time by comparing the sizes of different historical quakes.

March 18, 2014: Of note, this is one of those posts I did back East ahead of time so there would be something new each day on the blog. I should be in Oregon by now…magnitude 9 territory. Well, it was either that or Pocatello, in Yellowstone’s vicinity. Life on Earth is exciting! Anyway, I hope I won’t have any personal anecdotes about large-magnitude quakes when I get back online here.
