I’m offering you this as a Valentine today because there isn’t time this week to take a close look at genus Puma, as promised last week, even though it only has two species – the jaguarundi and the mountain lion (a/k/a cougar, panther, painter or catamount).
The mountain lion – the biggest of the small wild cats – has a wide range and isn’t shy about living in areas that humans call home.
This creates conflict and opportunities worth exploring in some depth, though hopefully it won’t take me a year to do it. That’s how long it took photographer Steve Winter to get this dramatic picture of a mountain lion in California:
