Of note, Chimborazo is a volcano that last erupted shortly before Christopher Columbus arrived in the West Indies (give or take 150 years, per the Smithsonian).
Its summit is almost 4 miles above sea level now, but some 35,000 years ago Chimborazo actually collapsed, producing a major debris avalanche. Its eruptions also tend to be explosive, and pyroclastic flows have run down to the 3800-meter/2.4-mile elevation.
The above video is poignant, but everybody there is quite fortunate that Chimborazo is sleeping soundly at present. May its peace continue for thousands of years more!
