As a side note, the Custis family is mentioned here. By the 1860s, Robert E. Lee was married to one of their descendants.
Mary Anna Custis Lee had very bad rheumatoid arthritis. Robert was on duty and in Richmond when the Army of the Potomac arrived in 1862, but Mary was at their home, the White House, in the countryside and she could not evacuate because of her immobility. General McClellan gallantly gave her safe passage to Richmond, and then used the White House as headquarters, burning it, unfortunately, when they left.
