The American Civil War 150th Anniversary: Who is this Irishman?

An image that didn’t fit in the regular series post will make a good subject for St. Patrick’s Day.

If you’ve seen Ron Maxwell’s Gettysburg, you probably enjoyed how he introduced the characters during the opening credits by also showing images of the original real people they were representing. Like so:

The image I had wanted to use is that of, one assumed, the original Sgt. “Buster” Kilrain – only it turns out, Kilrain was one of the few fictional characters in Shaara’s works. Here it is, and the caption.

Sadly, Sgt. “Buster” Kilrain was one of the few fictional characters in the Maxwell movies – a composite of several individuals, and not George Washington Buck. No one seems to know who this man was or is (he could be an actor).

Kevin Conway’s portrayal of Kilrain in both Gettysburg and Gods and Generals is so good it makes us wish the man had actually existed, and that performance is worth remembering today, too. There are very few Kilrain excerpts on YouTube yet, but here is one of his best moments:
